The 108th U.S. Open is at Torrey Pines in San Diego, 60 years since the last Open was played in Southern California. It is also the second time a municipal course has been chosen to host the National Championship.

The name of the Torrey pine, a rare tree that grows only in parts of the coast of San Diego and Santa Rosa Island.

The first U.S. Open Championship was played in the course 9 holes at Newport (RI) Golf and Country Club course in 1895. 10 professionals and amateurs took part in January and the winner was an Englishman who has been attending the Club Howard Rawlins. He scored 91 and 82 in the competition 36 holes, playing the ball with gutta-percha. $ 150 was for the winner, with a gold medal and the Open Championship Cup, held for 1 year.

The first American to win John J McDermott in 1911 and again in 1912 and 1913, the event took off when the 20 year old amateur Francis Ouimet defeated the two most famous English professionals Harry Vardon and Ted Ray in overtime.

During Torrey Pines North and South were designed in 1957 by William Bell Snr, along the coastal cliffs, La Jolla and both courses offer spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean.

Since 1968, the two who have played the seat of the Buick Invitational. Nicklaus, Palmer, Watson and Mickelson have won there and, more worryingly, the name of Tiger Woods may arise again - He actually won the Buick Invitational last three tournaments, so I think we can assume he does not play! Kept the course record in the South before the renovation in 2001 with 61.

In early 2002, the architect Rees Jones completed a renewal 3.3 million, adding 500 yards to the course with 38 other bunkers. Green contours have been modified and proposes some, dangerously close to the edge of the canyon!

Torrey Pines South will be the longest in U.S. Open history facility with multiple tees that can stretch to over 7643 meters.

The U.S. Open will be the tenth to be held in California, Pebble Beach in 2000 to be registered and before that at Riviera Country Club in 1948.

Defending champion Angel Cabrera is the first South American to win the Open United States when they played last year at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania.
